The Good Soup: When It's Overwhelming

Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. - James 5:13

What do we do when we feel overwhelmed?

Feelings can be BIG, and they can come in many different forms. They can be like wings that bring us onto cloud nine. At other times, they can feel like a weight, drowning us in the deepest oceans. You know what that is like. We all do. It is part of the human experience.

Even though these things are normal to the average human, it’s amazing how one can feel alone in their experiences. It can feel as if no one understands. Almost as if no one has gone through what you have gone through. Today, I am here to tell you this is not true. There is one person who will understand. His name is Jesus.

For some, this may feel impossible, but this is what the word of God says.

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. Hebrews 4:15 NLT

Throughout the life of Jesus, he lived through moments of joy and sadness. He lived through the acceptance of people and also through rejection. He even experienced fear.

 Jesus understands.

Jesus is the prime example of someone who lived through the toughest moments a human can face in this life. How did he deal with it? What carried Him in these awful moments of pain?

This was the solution for Him and for you: bring it to God.

In the Bible, we can see multiple times where Jesus leaves a difficult situation and runs to the arms of the Father. Why does He do this? It is because He knows that the source of grace, comfort, and strength comes from the Lord.

We can see in Luke 22 that when Jesus is on the Mount of Olives, He is in great “agony” over the thought of His upcoming gruesome death. He was afraid. Jesus was facing fear. In this moment, He chooses to pray. This same chapter says that the Mount of Olives is where He went “as usual.” This shows that Jesus went here often and that prayer was a common practice for Him. Coming to Father was an initial reaction to the anxiety concerning His impending crucifixion. It says that as he prayed, an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened Him.

In James 5:13, we are encouraged to pray. Amid our struggle, we are implored to bring it to the Lord. We do this because we understand that it is the Father who gives pure comfort, peace, and strength. We know this because He did it for Jesus. He met Jesus in the most emotionally taxing moment in His life and strengthened Him.

He will do that for you too.

That is why Jesus lived and died, to make a way for us to connect with God so He can strengthen us in our weakness. And He rose again so we can forever find encouragement in knowing that we can make it through our situation, just like He did.

So, when life gets overwhelming, bring it to God. He understands.
